WebAug 21, 2024 · MEMBERS of Shepshed History Society were taken on a picturesque and leisurely trip down the Grand Union Canal on their latest meeting. Amid brilliant weather conditions members enjoyed a perfect trip out on a Peter Le Marchant vessel purposely adapted to take members of the public on scenic trips on the canal. Shepshed (often known until 1888 as Sheepshed, also Sheepshead – a name derived from the village being heavily involved in the wool industry) is a market town and civil parish in the Charnwood Borough of Leicestershire, England with a population of 14,875 at the 2024 census. It is the second biggest settlement in the borough, after the town of Loughborough.
